Thread cutting: Old school style!

Insight into the WauWau production!

Thread cutting with an old machine

Thread cutting can of course also be done on a better drill press. In principle, a matching thread is cut in a pre-drilled hole. There are also taps that drill and cut in one. The crux of the matter, however, is that the tap first cuts in a clockwise direction, and then has to turn out in a counterclockwise direction. And that's not possible with a normal upright drill.

You can also drill a thread, especially in this dimension (M4) with a handheld screwdriver. However, the thread should be cut at 90°, otherwise the screw will sit crooked.

This old threading machine that we work with here at WauWau is of course set at a right angle. Therefore, the screw then also sits straight in the threaded hole. And it also has an adjustment option where the drill goes down and stops at a point and goes back up turning in the opposite direction.

As mentioned in the video, this machine was probably built around 1900 by Nitsche&Günther, who mainly produced spectacle frames. A link to the company history can be found here on flickr.

We cut a M4 thread in the grinder centering, a screw centers the cone there and is also used as a fine adjustment screw. A video about our grinder production is also available here>>>
