Reisepfeffermühle „die Piratenbraut“

Das ist eine „Reisepfeffermühle“, da nur 7cm hoch!

Passt aber auch zu Hause auf den Tisch, oder in den Wohnwagen, oder ins Auto, oder in den Rucksack, oder…

Die Piratenbraut ist die Schwester des „Kleinen Seemannes“, eine Mühle die ein Charakteristikum einer „Reisepfeffermühle“ aufweist: sie ist klein. Die 7.5 Zentimeter kommen deshalb zustande, da das WauWau Edelstahl Mahlwerk, mit dem sämtliche WauWau Mühlen bestückt werden, die Mindestmaße vorgibt. Kleiner wäre unhandlich oder ineffizient. Und das Mahlwerk ist ja bekanntlich das Herzstück einer Pfeffermühle.

Somit teilen sich die 7 cm in den drehbaren Oberteil (Gesicht) und den Körper aus Walnußholz. Die Nuß wurde fein geschliffen und geölt, somit sind die Poren geschlossen und Schmutz kann nicht eindringen. Es ist mit klarem Wasser zu reinigen. Das Öl schützt zwar die Oberfläche, allerdings wird das Walnußholz durch oftmaliges Benützen eine Patina bekommen, und immer schöner werden.

Der Oberteil der Piratenbraut wird hier im 7.Wiener Bezirk in einer Dreherei gefertigt. Das Aluminium wird aus dem vollen Block gefräst, danach entgratet und geschliffen. Eine Frau der Meere braucht natürlich wie der Seemann einen Ohrring, der aus Kupfer gefertigt wurde. Im anderen Ohr hat das „Luxusweib“ einen riesigen Klunker, nämlich einen hochwertigen Swarovski Zirconia.

Wo der Seemann grimmig dreinblickt, hat die Piratenbraut natürlich einen Kussmund. Das Kopftuch verdeckt das zweite Auge – oder ersetzt die Augenklappe. Die Nase der Seefrau ist eine Kugel aus schwarzem Bakelit. Diese Kugel dreht man ab, zieht den Aluoberteil vom Korpus, um die Mühle zu füllen. Man kann die Pfeffermühle zwar randvoll mit (schwarzen) Pfefferkörnern anfüllen, allerdings -durch die Größe bedingt – reicht diese Menge für etwas über 4 Tage. Zumindest nach meiner Erfahrung, und ich bin jedoch ein eifriger Würzer.

Das Mahlwerk an sich besteht aus Edelstahl, der Mahlring und Mahlkonus aus gehärtetem Edelstahl. Ausgelegt wurde die Mechanik auf des Schneiden von Pfefferkörnern, das heißt der Einzugswinkel und auch die Größe der Mahlzähne sind auf die Größe und auch auf die Konsistenz der Pfefferkörner abgestimmt. Meiner Erfahrung nach funktionieren gut der schwarze Pfeffer, grüner, weißer Pfeffer. Auch Stielpfeffer lässt sich gut mahlen. Jedoch der sogenannt rote „Pfeffer“ ist meist zu weich und verschmiert das Mahlwerk – abgesehen davon meist auch kein echter Pfeffer, sondern eine Beere.

This is a „travel pepper mill,“ as it’s only 7cm tall!

But it also fits perfectly on the table at home, or in the caravan, or in the car, or in your backpack, or…

The Pirate Bride is the sister of the „Little Sailor,“ a mill that shares a characteristic of a „travel pepper mill“: it’s small. The 7.5 centimeters are due to the fact that the WauWau stainless steel grinding mechanism, which is used in all WauWau mills, dictates the minimum dimensions. Any smaller would be impractical or inefficient. And the grinding mechanism is, as we all know, the heart of a pepper mill.

Thus, the 7 cm are divided between the rotating top (face) and the walnut wood body. The walnut wood has been finely sanded and oiled, so the pores are closed and dirt cannot penetrate. It can be cleaned with clear water. While the oil protects the surface, the walnut wood will develop a patina with frequent use and become even more beautiful over time.

The top part of the Pirate Bride is manufactured here in the 7th district of Vienna in a turning workshop. The aluminum is milled from a solid block, then deburred and sanded. A woman of the seas, of course, needs an earring just like the sailor, which is made of copper. In the other ear, the „luxury lady“ has a huge gem, namely a high-quality Swarovski Zirconia.

Where the sailor has a grim expression, the Pirate Bride naturally has a kissable mouth. The headscarf covers the second eye – or replaces the eye patch. The seafarer’s nose is a ball made of black Bakelite. You unscrew this ball and pull the aluminum top off the body to fill the mill. You can fill the pepper mill to the brim with (black) peppercorns, but – due to its size – this amount will only last for a little over 4 days. At least in my experience, and I am an avid spice user.

The grinding mechanism itself is made of stainless steel, and the grinding ring and cone are made of hardened stainless steel. The mechanism was designed for grinding peppercorns; that is, the feed angle and the size of the grinding teeth are adapted to the size and consistency of peppercorns. In my experience, it works well with black, green, and white pepper. Long pepper can also be ground well. However, the so-called red „pepper“ is usually too soft and clogs the grinder – and besides, it’s usually not real pepper at all, but a berry.

In any case, with the Pirate’s Bride, you will have a reliable companion on your travels, whether to other countries or just to the next restaurant.
